On today’s "Two Way Street" we present songs and stories about Thanksgiving and the upcoming holidays. Think of it as a playlist for the Thanksgiving weekend. Here are the songs we play on the show:
Ethel Merman sings “I Got The Sun In The Morning” from Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Kenny Loggins sings “Celebrate Me Home,” a longtime holiday favorite. Here he is introducing it and signing the song a number of years after he wrote it:
Jenny Ament picked "Our House" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young:
Here’s Richie Havens singing “Lean on Me.” He’s a great favorite of mine.
We played “All Good Gifts” from a recent Broadway revival of “Godspell.” But here’s the song from the movie version. As I watch it, it feels a little dated to me, but it’s still a beautiful song – and so appropriate for Thanksgiving.
There’s no video I could find of the Staple Singers doing “People Get Ready,” but here’s the version we used on the show:
Here’s Robert Duvall and Gail Youngs singing “Wings of a Dove” from “Tender Mercies:”
“Simple Gifts” seems to me to be another natural for the holiday season. Here’s the cover we played, featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Alison Krauss:
Judy Garland sang “Lost in the Stars” on her CBS Television show back in 1963. I love her version, in part, because she herself was so lost as a human being in spite of her great celebrity. I think her fragility shows through in this video:
Here’s the Sugarland mega-hot “Gold and Green,” the Christmas song Kristian Bush tells us about on the show:
And finally, here is the great Leonard Bernstein’s finale to “Candide:”
