There’s a city inside the City of Macon.

It’s made of tents strung along the banks of the Ocmulgee River downtown. Homeless people have been bedding down here, largely hidden from view, for years.

But this year, with the movement of people back to the nation’s downtown centers happening alongside the first increase in the nation’s homeless population in seven years, Macon-Bibb government says the tent city has to be pushed back, at least from inside Macon’s Central City Park.

Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless has beefed up outreach efforts ahead of Hurricane Irma, after Hurricane Matthew left some individuals stranded in high floodwater last year.


Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless executive director Cindy Murphy Kelley said Friday that teams had gone out to the area’s homeless camps, distributing fliers with information about the storm and the evacuation, which begins Saturday. She said they planned “to be a bit tougher with folks,” stressing the danger of the storm.



Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed promised a comprehensive new plan to address homelessness in his State of the City address in February. The mayor promised a new $50 million program, co-funded by the city and United Way. Yesterday, Atlanta’s city council approved its share of the funding as Reed’s office released details on the expansive plan.

After Legal Troubles, Atlanta Homeless Shelter To Close

An Atlanta homeless shelter will close its doors for good after years of legal battles.

Media outlets report that Peachtree Pine homeless shelter will close Aug. 28. Its building will be turned over to the downtown development group Central Atlanta Progress.


Each year, over fifty thousand college students struggle to attend classes while coping with homelessness. Last week, Kennesaw State University unveiled a first-of-its-kind housing facility for its homeless students.

We speak with Marcy Stidum, director of the university’s CARE Center, about the facility and the growing issue of homelessness in higher education.
